Electroalfa International, one of the most important Romanian industrial companies, continues to demonstrate that local industry can successfully compete at the European level. What began in the 90s, in a workshop in Botoșani, as a courageous entrepreneurial initiative, has transformed today into an integrator of modern energy solutions, capable of delivering complex "turnkey" projects in Romania and beyond.
For George Ciubotaru, Vice President of Electroalfa International, this transformation has meant a profound repositioning of the Romanian industry within a strategic sector. "Romania must not be just a consumer market for imported technologies. We can and actually do produce competitive equipment here at an international level, at a standard that seemed impossible 20 years ago." The recent years have fundamentally changed the profile of Electroalfa International. The growing demand for solutions to modernize electrical networks, investments in renewable energy, and European pressure to eliminate polluting technologies have accelerated the company's transition from traditional production to the field of integrated systems.
Today, Electroalfa International develops SF₆-free solutions, modular systems for smart grids, medium voltage equipment adapted to future standards, and digital technologies for monitoring and optimizing energy infrastructure. "Moving from an equipment supplier to a complete solutions integrator for energy infrastructure is the direction in which Europe is headed, and we are ready to be an active part of this process," explains George Ciubotaru.
A defining stage for the company is the operationalization of the SGB-Electroalfa factory, developed together with SGB-SMIT, one of the largest transformer manufacturers in Europe. The unit, fully functional and located in Botoșani, produces power transformers between 50 and 1000 kVA destined for international markets. The project puts Romania back on an industrial map from which it had been absent for decades. "SGB-Electroalfa shows that there is potential in our country. It is proof that Romania can build a modern industrial unit to Western European standards and can export advanced technologies. It is a partnership that raises the bar both for Electroalfa International and for the entire Romanian energy industry," states George Ciubotaru.
Industrial investments are complemented by those accelerating the digitalization of internal processes. In this way, production flows are monitored in real-time, proprietary IT systems allow for full traceability, and technological lines are continuously optimized for efficiency and quality. R&D is also a core focus for Electroalfa International. The company permanently designs new ranges of equipment—examples include SF₆-free medium voltage switchgears and solutions for renewable infrastructure—optimizes distributed networks, and digitally analyzes equipment performance. "Research and development of new products and solutions allow us to remain competitive in the market. In this way, we maintain our status as contributors to the economy," emphasizes Ciubotaru.
A portion of Electroalfa International's solutions is already implemented across all continents. For the future, the company aims to increase its export turnover, targeting regions where investments in energy infrastructure are growing, such as Eastern Europe, the Middle East, the Caucasus, and North Africa. "In foreign markets, it doesn't matter if you come from Romania. What matters is delivering correctly, on time, and to the required standards. This is our calling card," says George Ciubotaru.
Romania needs local industrial capacities in essential fields, such as grid modernization, expansion of renewable capacities, improvement of distribution infrastructure, and increasing energy efficiency. In this regard, the company is involved in major national projects, offering solutions for modernizing electrical substations, developing equipment for new photovoltaic and wind farms, and contributing to the consolidation of critical infrastructure.
"I want Romania to become an industrial hub for energy. What we are building in Botoșani is part of this vision: locally produced technology, people trained here, and solutions that remain in the economy," says George Ciubotaru. All strategic directions—international partnerships, industrial investments, exports, digitalization, and human resource development—are steps through which Electroalfa International positions itself as a strong regional integrator, with an active role in modernizing energy infrastructure in Eastern Europe and neighboring markets. "We have the people, we have the technology, and we have the ambition. We will continue the growth we have started, with the same rigor that has defined us over the last 34 years," concludes George Ciubotaru.
